Get more from your event

Whether you’re baking cakes, shaving your head or climbing a mountain, here are a few simple tips to help you raise even more money.

Gift Aid

We love it. Why? Because for every £1 people sponsor you, we can claim an extra 25p back from the government.

Although the extra money we receive isn't included in fundraising totals, every penny is used to help people affected by cancer. So encourage your family, friends and colleagues to boost all of their sponsorship money by ticking the box to add Gift Aid – they just have to be UK taxpayers. You can find out more about Gift Aid and see just how much more you could offer.

Sponsorship forms

To help get the cash flowing in, we recommend you use our super simple sponsorship forms. You can also contact our Supporter Care Hub on 0300 1000 200 and we'll post some to you.

JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving fundraising pages

Think about setting up a personalised donation page to collect your donations. Two of the most popular are JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving. They both offer a really easy way for people to sponsor you and add messages of support to spur you on when the training gets tough. And when you select Macmillan as your chosen charity, all income is transferred directly to us. So all you have to do is share your page on Facebook and Twitter to get the word out to all your friends and family.

Matched funding and other corporate support

Matched funding

Many employers offer a matched funding scheme. This is where they either donate a fixed amount towards your target or match the amount you’ve raised. So first, talk with your HR department and find out if this is something your employer does. If not, you could always ask them to make a one-off donation.

Help from colleagues

Your colleagues might be able to help you with sponsorship, spreading the word or volunteering at your event. So send out the emails, make the most of your intranets, notice boards and newsletters to tell everyone what you’re doing. You could set up a blog, hold smaller events at work and ask your colleagues to be involved.

Support from suppliers

You could also ask to approach your company’s suppliers – printers, stationers, candlestick makers – your company will be a valued client for them too, so they might be keen to help.

Company sponsorship

What about approaching a company to sponsor your event? You get extra funds and they get the benefit of positive publicity. If you need more reasons why it’s a great idea, we can send you some Macmillan leaflets explaining our work so that potential sponsors can see how their money will be spent.

Paying your money in

Once you’ve done the hard bit and raised the money, paying it in couldn’t be easier.

If you’ve set up a Just Giving or Virgin Money Giving account, we’ll receive your money directly.

If you’ve got a credit or debit card you can pay the money in online or over the phone. We can also send you a paying-in slip or give you our bank details to make a bank transfer. Visit our other ways to donate section to find out what's easiest for you.

If you would like to pay by post, please send a cheque and sponsorship forms to:

Macmillan Cancer Support
89 Albert Embankment

Please note, we do not recommend sending cash through the post.

The quicker you send your money in, the quicker it can go towards funding vital services.

Tribute Funds

If you're planning your event in memory of a relative or friend, you might like to set up a Tribute Fund. It's a place where you, and others can remember, celebrate and share. You can also pay in the money you've raised and people can continue to donate through the fund even after your event has finished.

Unlike a JustGiving Page, a Tribute Fund is permanent and doesn’t close three months after your event. You can link lots of different events to a fund and your friends and family will be able to leave messages, donations, and light a candle in memory.

100% of funds go to Macmillan, so all of the money that you raise will go toward helping people with cancer, and their families. If this is something you'd like to do, you can check out the Tribute Fund website, and start a fund now.
