What are dormant funds?

Dormant client funds are unclaimed balances remaining in a law firm’s client account that cannot be returned to the client because the client cannot be located or contacted.

The law firm can, with certain safeguards, withdraw such funds and donate them to charity.

If all reasonable steps to trace the client have been taken and all efforts to return the money have been unsuccessful, donating such residual funds to charity is the most hassle free, risk free and cost-effective option for law firms. In addition, you will be donating to a worthy cause.

How to donate dormant funds to Macmillan

To donate your dormant funds to Macmillan, please follow these 3 easy steps:
The number one.

Step 1: Inform the SRA

For balances over £500, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) authorisation is required. Use the SRA form to apply for the authority to withdraw funds from the client account. You can find the form on the SRA website.

To donate a balance up to £500, SRA authorisation is not required so this step is not required.

The number two.

Step 2: Contact Us

Contact our fundraising team to let us know that you have dormant funds to donate. We will co-ordinate internally and our Legal team will then send you an indemnity form for completion, together with our bank details.
The number three.

Step 3: Donate via bank transfer

When we have received your donation, we will send you an acknowledgment, thanking you for your generous support.
