Talking about cancer

How do I talk about cancer?

People often find it difficult to talk to someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. They want to help but may not be sure what to say.

Open and honest communication is the key.

Be sensitive to your employee’s needs and listen to them without judgement. Try to understand their situation.

It’s fine to ask questions, but be prepared that they may not know all the answers.

You should also respect your employee’s privacy. Decide together on the best way to communicate to each other and to colleagues.

For further advice on sensitive communication, first conversations and telling colleagues, see our information on how to talk about cancer.

Or watch our ten-minute video on Talking about cancer at work, which discusses the issue.
