The digestive system - image description

The diagram shows a person facing the viewer. It shows the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, large bowel and anus. When we describe the image, we use right and left to describe the actual location of these organs in the body, not the mirror image a viewer can see. Below the stomach is the small bowel which is a long tube that is in the abdomen and leads to the large bowel. This is a wider tube. It starts on the lower right side, goes up, then across the top of the abdomen and down the left side. At this point it becomes wider to form the rectum and then at the lower end joins the narrow tube that makes the anus where the bowel opens to the outside of the body.
