Bone marrow sample - image description

This illustration shows a bone marrow sample being taken. The sample is usually taken from the back of your hip bone (pelvis). You will be given an injection of local anaesthetic to numb the area before the doctor passes a needle through the skin into the bone. The doctor will draw a small sample of liquid marrow into a syringe, which will be examined under a microscope. The doctor will also take a small core of marrow from the bone.
