FAQs

  • How difficult is this challenge?

This challenge is graded as challenging. This is the perfect challenge for participants who are of an adventurous spirit and an open mind, but who perhaps haven’t taken on a strenuous challenge event before and are hoping to push themselves out of their comfort zone.

You can tell your supporters that on your Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge you will be:

    • Trekking for around 12 hours in a single day.
    • Covering 24 miles of undulating terrain. Almost a full marathon, but with 3 hills!
    • Ascending a total of 1532m in a single day. That’s more ascent than Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain!

Summiting 3 of the highest hills in the Yorkshire Dales, Pen Y Ghent (694m) Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m).

For questions regarding accessibility at this event please contact the challenge organisers.

  • Who runs the Defeat the Peak challenges?

For our Defeat the Peak series of events, we work with a challenge company called Charity Challenge. They have been operating challenges in the UK and overseas for 24 years and have an extensive safety management system in place for all their challenges. They prioritise the safety of participants, staff and support teams. Charity Challenge have operated a range of challenges for many years and have a huge wealth of experience.

Our Defeat the Peak challenges are led by their hugely experienced challenge leaders who all hold the summer Mountain Leader qualification or higher. They use a high ratio of leaders to participants, which increases for our night challenges. All events are risk assessed and all leaders are in communication with each other on the challenge via radios, with a full incident management plan in place to deal with any incidents or accidents. Participants are led from start to finish by the qualified leaders.

We are proud to partner with Charity Challenge whose safety record is exceptional and we are working with them to ensure that everything possible is maintained to continue providing this safe and positive experience on all our Defeat the Peak challenges.

  • What safety measures are in place?

This is a leader-led challenge and you will be accompanied by our challenge leaders at all times.

Charity Challenge employ experienced and fully qualified mountain leaders to accompany and lead you. The mountain leaders are first aid qualified and have extensive experience in leading challenges throughout the UK. They will be ultimately responsible for the running of the itinerary and the safety of your group. They will be carrying full safety equipment and mountain first aid kits with them at all times.

  • What should I wear for this challenge?

The most appropriate footwear for this challenge is a sturdy pair of walking boots.

As UK weather can change quickly, it’s important to bring a waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers.

We highly recommend bringing walking poles to help protect tired knees on steep ascents and descents.

You are also required to bring a good-quality head torch, along with spare batteries. Charity Challenge will provide further information on how to hire one for your challenge.

More details can be found on the Charity Challenge website.

  • What age can I be to take on this challenge?

You can take on this challenge from age 14 and above. Participants aged 14 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times during the challenge.

  • How much do I have to fundraise?

Your fundraising requirement depends on the type of place you choose.

If you select a Self-Funded place, there is no fundraising target, as you are covering the cost of your own place.

If you choose a Minimum Sponsorship place, your fundraising target will be £400. This covers the cost of your event place, ensuring the majority of the money you raise goes directly to supporting our vital services for people living with cancer.
