A new kind of cancer support in Newark
Support designed around you
Macmillan has opened the UK's first community-based Cancer Information and Support Service at Newark's YMCA Community and Activity Village. Developed in response to feedback from people affected by cancer, this innovative centre moves support away from hospital settings to create a more accessible, welcoming environment for everyone who needs it.
Continuing our partnership with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the centre is an extension of the existing service at King’s Mill Hospital and demonstrates our commitment to supporting people with cancer across the area.
As Andrea Murphy, MCISS Lead at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, puts it: “The journey from Newark to our King’s Mill Macmillan Centre can feel overwhelming… The YMCA is a welcoming space where several organisations will come together under one roof to support people.”
Help that covers real life
Cancer touches every part of life. That’s why the centre is working with local partners to offer:
- Emotional support
- Practical guidance (e.g. transport, daily living needs)
- Financial and benefits advice
- Opportunities to connect socially
All under one roof, helping you focus on you, not just the cancer. Find out more about all the ways we can help.
A model for better cancer care
This Newark centre is more than just a local initiative, it is a glimpse of what’s possible. By working closely with the NHS and the YMCA, we are showing how community-based support can complement clinical care and reach more people in ways that feel meaningful.
Whatever stage of the cancer journey you are on whether it’s worries about symptoms, waiting for results, in treatment, living long-term with cancer, or grieving a loss. You are welcome here. So are your family, friends, carers and even employers looking to make adjustments at work.
The centre is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4pm, with drop-in support or pre-booked appointments.
For more information or to contact the service, call 01636 681681 ext 5936 or 07553 726425, or email sfh-tr.cancer.info@nhs.net.
