World Emoji Day

For World Emoji Day on 17 July 2016 we have translated some of Macmillan's key milestones into emoji form. Starting from the beginning in 1911 to the present day.

1911: Douglas Macmillan’s dad develops cancer and unfortunately he passes away. He leaves £10 to Douglas.

Douglas Macmillan uses this money to start the National Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer (later to be known as Macmillan Cancer Support) to help other people affected by cancer.

1925: Macmillan is groundbreaking in recognising the financial impact of cancer.

1931: First full-time paid visitors care for people at home.

1947: Douglas is awarded an OBE.

1948: The NHS is formed.

1954: Money raised helps to put televisions in hospitals.

1971: The first York Raceday fundraiser takes place.

1975: First Macmillan nurse is funded.

1977: We develop our funding model with the NHS.

1985: Our corporate partnership with The National Gardens Scheme begins.

1987: Our fundraised income is more than £10 million for first time ever.

1989: Our first information booklet, Help is there, is published.

1990: The first ever World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

1992: Our first Information and Support centre is opened.

1997: The Macmillan Support Line is open to everyone.

2006: We rebrand to Macmillan Cancer Support.

2007: Our Online Community launches.

2009: Campaign successes include free prescriptions for cancer patients and free hospital car parking in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

2011: We celebrate our 100th birthday.

2012: The University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre opens.

2013: Our first Not Alone TV advert is aired.

New fundraising events Dress up and Dance and the Longest Day Golf Challenge are launched.

2014: Macmillan takes part in the Pride parade in London for the first time.

Macmillan employee Sam Greatrex rows the Atlantic Ocean and breaks a world record.

The My Organiser app is available.

We launch our Boots Macmillan Beauty Advisors.

2015: Fundraisers take part in the Adrenaline Rush obstacle race for Macmillan.

We celebrate 25 years of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

We are chosen to take part in ITV’s Text Santa telethon.

2016: We highlight the impact cancer can have on your finances and what we can do to help.

We launch our corporate partnership with Pizza Express.

We campaign to raise awareness of cancer carers and the support they need.
