Fundraising in the community

Our professional fundraisers help secure regular donations or lottery subscriptions from people in our communities. You may meet our friendly teams in many locations, such as supermarkets, shopping centres, shows, or even at your doorstep.

Our fundraisers can explain how your support helps people in your local area and across the UK, as well as share information about the help and services available.

Face-to-face fundraising helps Macmillan attract new supporters, build trust and awareness, and secure long-term regular income to fund our vital services.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is face to face fundraising?

Our fundraisers visit homes and public venues such as shopping centres and shows in designated areas around the UK.

They may ask you to support people living with cancer by signing up to the Macmillan Weekly Lottery (which provides the chance to win hundreds of prizes every single week!), or by giving a regular donation via Direct Debit.

Macmillan only works with specialist fundraising agencies who help coordinate campaigns. They use fundraisers who are trained and dedicated to helping Macmillan support fair cancer care for all.

  • How do you ensure the security of my personal data?

We take the security of your personal details extremely seriously and have measures in place to protect them.

If you have chosen to support us by Direct Debit you will receive a letter from us confirming your details and notifying you of the amount and date your donation will reach us.

If an error is made by Macmillan Cancer Support or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

You can find out more about your rights under Direct Debit on the Direct Debit website. You can also cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society, or by emailing, calling or writing to the Macmillan Supporter Donations team:

    Telephone: 0300 1000 200 (Monday - Friday 9:30am-4:30pm)
    Email: fundraising@macmillan.org.uk

  • Do fundraisers ask for cash?

No. Our fundraisers are not permitted to ask for cash, they are only allowed to ask for donations through Direct Debit.

If a fundraiser asks you for cash, they may not be genuine so please report this to the Supporter Care Team. Please contact them on 0300 1000 200 (Monday - Friday 9:30am-4:30pm) or email fundraising@macmillan.org.uk.

Direct Debits are one of the most effective ways of giving to charity. It reduces administration costs and generates a steady and reliable stream of income, allowing us to plan for the future.

  • What time do your fundraisers work?

Our face to face fundraisers work throughout the day, with those stationed in public venues working to the opening hours of each specific venue, while our door to door teams may visit you between 12pm - 9pm on weekdays and 10am - 6pm on weekends. If a Macmillan fundraiser contacts you or stops you at a time you don’t think they should be working, please contact our Supporter Care Team on 0300 1000 200 (Monday - Friday 9:30am-4:30pm) or email fundraising@macmillan.org.uk.

  • Is face to face fundraising regulated?

We are registered with the Fundraising Regulator, the independent regulator of all fundraising carried out by or on behalf of charities and we are also members of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. We adhere to the Fundraising Regulator's Code of Fundraising Practice which sets out the standards which apply to face to face fundraising. We monitor all professional fundraisers that work on our behalf against these standards.

  • Are your fundraisers trained?

Yes. Our fundraisers are continuously trained throughout the year in order to maintain the high standard that we expect anyone who represents Macmillan to uphold.

  • Why do we use this method of fundraising?

Face to face and door to door fundraising are safe, secure and cost-effective way to initiate support. Every year these programs raise a huge amount that helps Macmillan make cancer care fairer for everyone.

They are also a great way to raise awareness of the services Macmillan provides, as our fundraisers carry details for all the different ways we can support people - which means thousands more will know who to turn to if they need our help.

  • Who are fundraisers and how will I know they are genuine?

Our face to face fundraisers work for specialist agencies. The agencies we are working with at the moment are called BRC Promotions and The Fundraising Partnership.

Our fundraisers wear Macmillan-branded clothing and carry a branded ID photo-card.

They will also be carrying Macmillan literature and an electronic tablet device which they use to complete sign ups. Whether they're asking for a regular donation or for you to join the Macmillan Weekly Lottery, our fundraisers will only ever ask for a Direct Debit – they will never ask for cash donations.
