What is a learning and development grant?

If you're a Macmillan Professional, you can apply for a grant of up to £1000 to cover the costs of your learning and development. It's our way of supporting you personally and professionally, so you can provide the very best care for people living with cancer.

What can I use my grant for?

You can apply for a grant to help you attend:

  • professional conferences
  • learning and development courses
  • events not provided by Macmillan.

Please note, it is the responsibility of your employer to fund learning that is a requirement of your role.

Who can apply for a grant?

We want support the learning and development of as many Macmillan Professionals as we can. To apply, you will need to:

  • be a Macmillan Professional (and have been for at least 3 months)
  • complete your induction day.

If you're in an adopted Macmillan post, the three month period starts when your employer has completed the adoption process.

How much funding will I get?

You can apply for up to £1000, per calendar year, towards the costs of your learning and development activity. We accept two applications per year (up to the combined funding limit of £1000).

What you need to apply

Before you start your application, you will need:

  • contact details of your line manager
  • evidence about the course you are applying for
  • an understanding of how the activity will improve the lives of people living with cancer.

Can I claim my expenses?

Travel and accommodation expenses should not be claimed as part of your grant application and we encourage you to check with your employer to cover these expenses. However, help is available if you need it.

When will I find out if my application is successful?

You will receive an email by the 1st of the following month of your application. Please note, grant applications submitted after the 15th will be assessed the following month.

  • What happens if my application is approved?
  • We will get in touch to let you know how much funding you will receive. Please note, this may be different from the amount you requested in your application.

  • What happens if my application is declined?
  • We will get in touch to explain our decision, which will help you with future applications. All decisions are final and there is no appeals process for grants.

How will I receive my grant?

When your application is approved, we'll pay your learning and development provider directly. Please note, we can only approve payment on receipt of an invoice. If you are registering for a conference, we can provide you with a cheque.

Will I need to evaluate my learning?

As a condition of the grant being approved, you will be asked to complete an evaluation three months after your activity.

We may ask you to provide a case study to demonstrate your learning. We do not accept new grant applications until the evaluation is completed and approved.
