Emotional support for Leanne

See how Macmillan supported Leanne emotionally throughout her treatment and beyond.

Leanne was trying for a baby through IVF when she was diagnosed with endometrium cancer. Macmillan volunteers were right there for her to listen whenever Leanne needed to talk, and helped organise counselling to support her emotionally after she had to have a hysterectomy.

'My consultant told me “If there was any cancer to get, this is a good one to get, and the recovery rate is very good,”' says Leanne.

'Each time I had the hysteroscopy my results came back with good news, and I was starting to feel positive. But later that year I was told that the cancer had come back. I decided that I was going to have a hysterectomy. It was the hardest decision of my life. We will go on and have a family but it's so raw.

'I work for a charity which has a Macmillan volunteers department. If I was having a bad day I would go down to the Macmillan office and talk to them. I feel safe there — they instantly get it and I’d always feel a bit better just being with them.

'The hospital told me I couldn’t have counselling because I lived too far away. When I told the Macmillan volunteers they helped organise it for me. It was such a blessing. I had somewhere where I could have a cry and a shout and rave. If the Macmillan volunteer girls hadn’t helped I don’t know what I would have done.

'These ladies don’t understand what a massive support they have been to me. Through support of my family, my wife and Macmillan we will be alright.’
