Research events and conferences in 2017

Members of the Evidence department attended events throughout the year to talk, present or share insights.

Public Health England's NCRAS conference, 13-14 June 2017, Manchester

In June, members of the Evidence department represented Macmillan at Public Health England’s 2017 Cancer Data and Outcomes Conference in Manchester. This annual two-day event, allows us to promote how Macmillan is using health data to improve nationwide cancer services.

The conference attracts prominent members of the cancer data community, policy makers and clinicians. It provides an important platform to raise Macmillan’s profile as an expert on the 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, and the data partnerships we maintain across the UK.

The focus for the event was on exploring how data is being used across the patient pathway, from prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through to patient experience, quality of life and patient outcomes.

Macmillan was heavily involved in delivering sessions during the conference:

  • Delivering a speed presentation looking at the number of patients attending A&E towards the end of their life. For more info on this work see this exclusive with The Times.
  • Presenting the latest analysis looking at variations in interactions with secondary care in the year following diagnosis. Read news coverage in the Daily Mirror and Daily Express.
  • Giving a joint plenary with Cancer Research UK, Public Health England and the Wellcome Trust on the latest update to the review of informed choice.
  • Speaking to delegates about Macmillan’s recent piece on deprivation and cancer survival in Scotland. Read the full technical report [PDF].
  • Chairing parallel sessions on inequalities and cancer and population-based analysis.
  • Closing off the event by taking part in a plenary looking at the latest update from the national cancer vanguard.

Visitors to our exhibition stand were invited to try out Macmillan’s new Local Cancer Intelligence Tool using iPads. We displayed leaflets detailing our UK-wide data partnerships, and presented nine research posters.

As always, the event was well attended by members of the cancer data and research community and cancer patients and carers. More information on the conference and any downloadable slides can be found on the Public Health England website.
