Cancer Voices

The cancer voices community brings together individual people with personal experience of cancer, which they are willing to share to help achieve change. In partnership with Macmillan, cancer voices share their diverse lived experience to influence our work.

What do Cancer Voices do?

When you are part of cancer voices, you can get involved in a variety of projects, discussions, and events.

Take a look at the cancer voices video above to hear from people in the cancer voices community who've worked with us to influence what we do.

If you would like to get involved in cancer voices projects, you can dedicate as much or as little time as you wish. For example, you may choose to do a one-off activity or take part in a project over several months. It’s up to you how active you want to be, how much time you have to offer, and which activities interest you.

You don’t need specific skills or experience to be part of cancer voices. Your key contribution is your personal experience of cancer. Everyone who works with us helps us to understand what matters to them and how this can be reflected in Macmillan’s work and services. We would love to hear from you.

Our monthly cancer voices newsletter gives more of a flavour of what cancer voices do. You can sign up to receive the newsletter when you join.

How do I join the cancer voices community?

When you join the cancer voices community, you will be offered a welcome call. This is an opportunity for you to hear more about cancer voices, ask us questions, tell us what has motivated you to get involved, and what interests you.

You can also browse Volunteering Village for current cancer voices opportunities.

Online cancer voices events

During 2020 and 2021, we have held online events to stay in touch with everyone across the cancer voices community. This has enabled us to keep progressing some of our work with you.

In July 2020, we held our first cancer voices webinar.

In May 2021, we hosted a successful online event, attended by 82 people from the cancer voices community. We launched the cancer voices film at the event. The cancer voices community helped plan the event, present sessions, and facilitate discussions.

Annual cancer voices conference

Each year, the cancer voices community is invited to join us at our annual conference. This two-day event is a great opportunity for you to hear how cancer voices and Macmillan are working together. And you can find out what new opportunities there are for you to get involved in.

At our conference, you'll be able to:

  • contribute to discussions, debates and tell us what matters to you
  • meet other people with similar experiences
  • hear about and give feedback on the future direction of Macmillan
  • take part in a variety of workshops to influence what we do and how we work.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the last conferences we were able to hold were in the Spring and Autumn of 2019.

We will update this page soon to let you know about our plans for our 2022 Conference.
