Diagnosing cervical cancer

Cervical screening and CIN

Cervical screening looks for changes to cells in the cervix before they become cancerous. It is also known as a cervical smear, or smear test.

  • About cervical screening

Cervical screening can help stop cancer developing in the cervix by finding abnormal cells early.

  • Understanding your test results

Within two weeks of having your cervical screening you should get a letter with your results.

  • Colposcopy and CIN

A colposcopy is a test that shows any abnormal areas of the cervix and how abnormal the cells there are.

  • Understanding treatment

If a colposcopy shows abnormal cells, you may have treatment to remove or destroy them.
