Text to donate Terms and conditions

Text-to-donate is a quick and easy way to donate to Macmillan to support our vital services for people affected by cancer.

What you are charged and what Macmillan receives

For donation texts, you will be charged the amount of the donation plus the standard text message rate specified by your network provider. Macmillan receives 100% per £1 donated in this way.

The standard network charge for text messages is at your network provider's rates. If the keyword or short code you text are incorrect, you may still be charged a message at your standard network rate. However you won't be charged by us for the donation as you won't be donating to Macmillan.

There is no limit on the number of times you may make a donation via text but there is a daily limit of £30 on text donations. You will not be able to donate more by text from the same number on the same day, but you may still incur your standard network message charge if you try.

How will my donation be used?

We rely on donations for 98% of our income, and your money will help us to provide a variety of services that help make sure no one has face cancer alone. Find out more about what we do, or see a detailed breakdown of how we’ve spent our income in our annual reports.

Where and on what devices can text-to-donate be used?

Please note that you can donate from a UK mobile only. You cannot donate using this service from a Channel Islands, Isle of Man or other non-UK mobile. If you donate using this service from a UK mobile outside England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you may incur additional network charges.

Who can use text-to-donate?

You must obtain permission from the bill payer before sending a text message. If you are under 16 years old, you must have your parent or guardian's permission to send a text donation to Macmillan.

Your data will be handled in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and will only be used to keep you informed about our fundraising, activities, events and services. We never sell or swap your details with third parties.

Donation by monthly/weekly subscription

You can support Macmillan by giving monthly via text message. Depending on the service you have signed up to you will either be giving monthly or weekly.

Here is how regular giving by SMS subscription works:

  • Immediately after you sign up (via SMS or web form) you will receive a free message confirming that you have set up a regular gift and how to stop or skip donations.
  • The day before each monthly/weekly donation is due you will receive another free message with instructions on how to skip your donation. If you're happy to give then you don't need to do anything and you'll be charged as usual. However you can choose to skip a month/week by replying SKIP within 24 hours. If you do that, we won't take a donation that month/week - you will just incur one standard network text message charge.
  • Every three months/weeks you will be reminded by free SMS how to stop your donations.
  • If you choose to skip three months/weeks in a row we will also send you instructions on how to stop your donations. If you want to continue giving, you will not need to do anything.
  • If you want to stop giving monthly/weekly then you can text STOP to 70550 at any time.

Gift Aid

Your donation may be eligible for Gift Aid. We may contact you on the mobile number you used to give you the opportunity to add Gift Aid to your donation. We may also send you a link to webpage where you submit your details, however, please note that as with any mobile browsing, you may incur charges from your network provider.  If we ask you to text us details for Gift Aid, then a standard text message fee will be incurred.
