Cancer Environment Improvement Grants
A Cancer Environment Improvement Grant is to support improvements to existing Macmillan environments, supporting Macmillan’s strategic objectives. The improvements typically cover small works and the requirements and scope is agreed upon between the applicant and Macmillan.

Examples of what Macmillan can and cannot fund with a Cancer Environment Improvement Grant can be found below. This is not an exhaustive list.
What we can fund
- Furniture
- Painting and decoration (where this does not constitute backlog maintenance)
- Updating finishes
- Improving access
- Art
- Improvement to support privacy and dignity
- Overall improvement of the patient experience
Example of what we cannot fund
- Improvements that are not in line with our charitable objectives.
- Improvements that are in breach of our policies.
- Improvements that do not support existing Macmillan environments.
- Data projects and Macmillan microsites.
- Anything that will fund the core business of another organisation.
- Anything that does not meet relevant design guidelines unless approved by the Macmillan Professional Engagement team.
- The intervention has not already taken place – Macmillan is unable to provide funding for retrospective projects.
- Activities that another organisation/body has a legal obligation to provide.
Eligibility criteria
Please review the criteria below carefully before applying. If you're unsure about your eligibility, complete the eligibility quiz or speak with a member of the Professional Engagement team.
- The role must strategically align with Macmillan’s objectives.
- The applicant must clearly demonstrate the impact the improvements will have within their organisation and community.
- The grant funding cannot be used to cover other activity outside of the details agreed upon in the application.
- Applicants must present, with the support of the Macmillan team:
- A cost breakdown for the activity
- Improvement Action Plan detailing the activity
- Programme of works for implementation and completion of the activity
- An undertaking from the applicant that you will undergo an MQEM assessment/re-assessment upon completion of the planned activity, where applicable.
- Evidence of spend is required to request a payment. You must be able to provide proof of all expenditures related to the grant award before Macmillan can approve the release of funds.
- The intervention has not already taken place – Macmillan is unable to provide funding for retrospective projects.
How to apply
To apply for a Cancer Environment Improvement Grant, please follow these steps:
- Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the criteria for your chosen grant type.
- Supporting Documents: Check the eligibility criteria to see which supporting documents are required during the process to ensure you can meet all requirements.
- Organisation Approval: Seek approval from your organisation.
- Payment Agreement: Ensure your organisation agrees to pay for the activity, with Macmillan reimbursing them upon receiving a request for payment. (Macmillan cannot fund retrospective projects, so ensure payment is post-application approval.)
- Complete your Application: Contact your Macmillan representative in Professional Engagement for an application form.
- Review and Approval: Macmillan will review your application and notify you of the outcome.
- Claiming Funds: Ensure your organisation submits a request for payment with proof of expenditure to receive reimbursement from Macmillan.
