Macmillan Cancer Support & Information Service at University Hospitals of North Midlands (Royal Stoke University Hospital)

Information and support centres

We are a non-clinical centre that offers a listening ear and provides Signposting Information & Practical and Emotional support to anyone affected by cancer. We are a drop-in service, so you don’t need a referral or appointment to access our support; you can also telephone or email us, where a trained member of staff can offer time and support to listen to you. Our service is offered across both hospital sites (Royal Stoke University Hospital (Stoke on Trent and County Hospital, Stafford); with both centres located close to the main entrance on each site. We offer emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer; this can include patients, family members, carers, and those beyond the immediate family network; including teachers, employers, local charities etc. We have a dedicated quiet room at Royal Stoke for patients and / or their loved ones affected by cancer. This allows privacy and a quiet space to take time to reflect. This facility is only available at our Royal Stoke centre. We hold a wide range of high quality and up-to-date cancer information materials, which are on display in the centres and across both hospital sites, and which may be available in other formats such as CDs, Braille, large print or in other languages - so please do ask if any of these are more suitable. We believe that information helps you to make informed decisions, at a time that is right for you. The support and information we offer is tailored to your needs, in order to help you regain some control over what is happening to you or those close to you. We can signpost and / or refer you to various services and charities (both local and national). We can offer you information on services who can support with grants to help with the extra cost of having cancer as well as many other practical concerns such as blue badge support. You may just want to come and talk through how you are feeling; we have both trained staff and volunteer members who have been affected by cancer / or cared for someone with cancer and who can take time to listen. We support and offer ‘Look Good Feel Better’ skin and beauty workshops (for patients only). We have a strong partnership with the National Macmillan Cancer Support Charity since receiving both their support and funding to open our centres at both Royal Stoke University hospital and County Hospital, Stafford; this is the reason why we share the name ‘Macmillan’ in our title. Please note, our opening hours, are Monday to Friday 10.00am – 16.00pm. If you are making a special journey to visit us, please ring the centre beforehand to make sure the centre is open and that someone is here to meet you. The centres currently close between 1pm – 1.30pm each day for lunch.
