The dancing fundraising queens: Al Pal's Mamma Mia! fundraising event

Al’s Pals was set up in 2020 to fundraise in memory of Alison, who died aged 49. The Exmouth-based fundraising group has been raising money for Macmillan in memory of their friend ever since.

“Macmillan was there for Alison and her family during the most difficult times of their lives. They provided invaluable support,” says Kirsty, who organised the event. “As a close group, we wanted to give something back to the charity that had given so much to her and ensure that more people affected by cancer receive the same care.”

Over the years, they have done many different types of fundraising events in memory of Alison – who was also known as Al, which is how the group got its name.

In June 2026, the group held a Mamma Mia!-themed event which raised over £12,000 for Macmillan. The 2008 ABBA-inspired smash hit film set in Greece was an excellent choice to capture people’s imaginations and raise lots of funds.

“When we were thinking about our next fundraising event, there was only one theme that felt truly right,” says Kirsty. “The inspiration to do a Mamma Mia! themed night came from Alison. I first met her at an ABBA tribute concert, and I’ll never forget it. She sang every single song, knew every single word, and radiated so much joy. It was impossible not to smile watching her.”

Rather than remember Alison with sadness, Al’s Pals wanted to honour her in a way that reflected who she was. A person full of fun, music, laughter and love.

“We wanted everyone to experience the happiness that ABBA brought to Alison,” says Kirsty.

For the event, the Exmouth Rugby Football Club donated the use of their venue and marquee. They had a local DJ and an ABBA tribute band called 'Take a Chance on Us' perform at the event. 

“Every ticket sold, every raffle ticket bought and every dance on the night helped support the incredible work that Macmillan does for people living with cancer and their families,” says Clare, Treasurer of Al’s Pals. “Knowing that we could celebrate Alison’s life while making a difference to others made the evening even more special.”

“We hope Alison would have been looking down, singing along to every song, smiling at everyone dressed in sparkles, and proud that her love of ABBA brought so many people together,” said Kirsty.
