Information about professional fundraisers

Face to Face Lottery fundraising campaigns are a cost-effective and efficient way of sourcing regular donations. They're also a great way to tell people about Macmillan's services and make sure everyone knows how to reach us if they need our support. Our trained fundraisers could be knocking on doors in your neighbourhood or talking to people at a venue near you about the vital work we are doing.

About face to face lottery fundraising

In 2022, Macmillan raised £13,470,000 – of which 3% was spent on prizes, 33% on costs. This means that a fantastic 64%, or almost £8.5 million, was split across the four subsidiary companies of Macmillan Cancer Support, who promote the society lotteries to raise funds and help support different areas of Macmillan’s work for people living with cancer.

The great news for you is that the likelihood of winning a prize is 1 in 269.

If you play the Macmillan Lottery, you'll join a community of people who are helping us to be there for more people living with cancer. Thanks to the amazing support from people all over the UK, last year we were able to support an estimated 2 million people diagnosed with cancer.

Weekly postcode lists

If you've been visited by a fundraiser or seen one in the local area and your postcode isn't on our list, they could still be a legitimate Macmillan fundraiser.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is face to face fundraising?

Our professional fundraisers visit homes and shopping centres in designated areas around the UK, asking people to give a regular donation to Macmillan via Direct Debit.

We work with specialist agencies who help us coordinate and carry out our campaigns, and they use fundraisers who are specially trained to work on our campaigns.

Some of these fundraisers get supporters signed up to our weekly lottery, too, which is a great way to support Macmillan – by paying your entry via Direct Debit, you get the chance to win hundreds of prizes every single week.

  • How do you ensure the security of my personal data?

We take the security of your personal details extremely seriously and have measures in place to protect them.

If you have chosen to support us by Direct Debit you will receive a letter from us confirming your details and notifying you of the amount and date your donation will reach us.

If an error is made by Macmillan Cancer Support or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

You can find out more about your rights under Direct Debit on the Direct Debit website. You can also cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society, or by emailing, calling or writing to the Macmillan Supporter Donations team:

    Telephone: 0300 1000 200
    Email: fundraising@macmillan.org.uk

  • Do fundraisers ask for cash?

No. Our fundraisers are not permitted to ask for cash, they are only allowed to ask for donations through Direct Debit.

If a fundraiser asks you for cash, they may not be genuine so please report this to the Supporter Care Team. Please contact them on 0300 1000 200 or email fundraising@macmillan.org.uk.

Direct Debits are one of the most effective ways of giving to charity. It reduces administration costs and generates a steady and reliable stream of income, allowing us to plan for the future.

  • What time do your fundraisers work?

Our face to face fundraisers work throughout the day, with those stationed in shopping centres working to the opening hours of each specific centre, while our door to door teams may visit you between 12pm - 9pm on weekdays and 10am - 6pm on weekends. If a Macmillan fundraiser contacts you or stops you at a time you don’t think they should be working, please contact our Supporter Care Team on 0300 1000 200 or email fundraising@macmillan.org.uk.

  • Is face to face fundraising regulated?

We are registered with the Fundraising Regulator, the independent regulator of all fundraising carried out by or on behalf of charities and we are also members of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. We adhere to the Fundraising Regulator's Code of Fundraising Practice which sets out the standards which apply to face-to-face fundraising. We monitor all professional fundraisers that work on our behalf against these standards.

  • Are your fundraisers trained?

Yes. Our fundraisers are continuously trained throughout the year in order to maintain the high standard that we expect anyone who represents Macmillan to uphold.

  • Why do we use this method of fundraising?

Face to face fundraising is a safe, secure and cost-effective way to initiate support and raise an astonishing amount of money – money that will help us reach and improve the lives of people affected by cancer. It's also a great way to raise awareness of the services Macmillan provide, as our fundraisers also carry details for all the different ways we can support people - which means thousands more will know who to turn to if they need our help.

  • Who are fundraisers and how will I know they are genuine?

Our face to face fundraisers work for specialist agencies. The agencies we’re working with at the moment are called Charity Link, BRC Promotions and BriteVox.

Our fundraisers wear Macmillan-branded jackets or t-shirts and carry a branded ID photo-card.

They will also be carrying Macmillan literature and an electronic tablet device which they use to complete sign ups. Whether they're asking for a regular donation or for you to join the weekly Macmillan lottery, our fundraisers will only ever ask for a Direct Debit – they will never ask for cash donations.

Teams that visit shopping centres will work as per their opening hours, while our door-to-door fundraisers work between 12pm - 9pm on weekdays, and 10am - 6pm on weekends.

If you require further reassurance, please contact our Supporter Care Team on 0300 1000 200 or email fundraising@macmillan.org.uk
