Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ)

Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) is a service available to people affected by cancer. The service offers people a Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) to discuss “what matters to you” at significant points in their cancer journey. It provides dedicated support to all people affected by cancer including families and carers.

What is the service?

Macmillan's Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) is an integral part of the Scottish Government’s Transforming Cancer Care programme. The service builds upon very successful, non-clinical projects Macmillan have already established around Scotland.

It is a tried and tested model that supports people when they may not know where to turn. An independent evaluation of Glasgow City’s ICJ service was published by Edinburgh Napier University in 2020. You can read the report here.

Our services offer everyone affected by cancer, including family members and carers, the chance to have a conversation with a specialist practitioner to discuss their needs and help them access tailored information and support.

The support could be emotional, practical or physical. For example, people can talk to us about how they feel, get help with housing or money worries, or help at home - whatever matters most to them.

Macmillan Improving the Cancer Journey is evolving, and people affected by cancer, local third sector organisations, Health and Social Care Partnerships, Local Authorities and Health Boards continue to work together to design and deliver this service in every part of Scotland.
