Lloyd on work and cancer

Self-employed Lloyd was worried that taking time off work to get treatment for lung cancer would mean he wouldn’t be able to make his mortgage payments.

But Emma, his Macmillan Benefit Adviser, was there to make sure Lloyd got the right benefits, and had time to recover properly.

Lloyd's story

After my operation I didn’t know when I was going to be able to return to work. It was quite hard to make a decision like that, especially after I’ve had previous surgeries and returned to work too soon.

My job is quite physical and highly demanding. I could hardly walk a couple of steps before I became breathless so I definitely couldn’t do my job.

Going back to work was paramount. That was the first thing that was on my mind even before I had the surgery.

I was really worried about paying my mortgage and just general bills, because I live alone and if I don’t go out to work there’s no one else who’s going to pay my bills.

Emma’s support was huge because when it was all happening I couldn’t see past tomorrow with regards to my business, with regards to my home.

She played a massive role in my recovery – because it’s not just only about the benefits she was able to secure for me, she also gave me a better mental attitude towards dealing with the whole illness.

Emma’s help has meant the world to me, recovering fully before returning to work. Now I have returned to work I feel like my business has actually got better. The time that I had off gave me time to reflect on how to move forward.
