Supporting Deaf people living with cancer in Nottingham

Everyone should have access to cancer information but Deaf people living with cancer face real barriers in communicating with healthcare professionals, without the help of British sign language interpreters.

The Macmillan Deaf Cancer Support Project provides virtual emotional and practical support to deaf people living with cancer. The project started locally in Nottingham and has since expanded to remotely meet the needs of Deaf people across the all of the UK.

Fish rescue in Northampton

The Macmillan Social Work Team at Northampton General Hospital make it their mission to go above and beyond, doing whatever it takes to support patients.

When you’re moving to palliative care, you’d think tropical fish would be the last thing on your mind. But when a cancer patient was getting anxious about his beloved pets, Jan from the Macmillan Social Care team collected them from his houseboat, giving Nemo, Charles, and King Sebastian the 14th a new home - and their owner peace of mind.

Tackling taboos in Anerley

Cancer can sometimes be a challenging subject in African and Caribbean communities, but Janet from the Macmillan engagement team has found a new way to get those conversations going: dominoes.

Janet teamed up with local social group The Pineapple Club in South East London, creating a safe space where people could open up over a dominoes tournament. This partnership is helping to ensure people get vital information about cancer, and the opportunity to ask Macmillan staff and volunteers any questions they might have.
