Jane Cummings CBE

Jane joined the Board in 2014, and is a member of the Charitable Expenditure and Remuneration Committees. Until January 2019 she was an executive director at NHS England, the professional lead for nurses and midwives in England, and the Regional Director for London. From May 2020 to June 2021, Jane was a senior advisor in the Department of Health and Social Care, supporting the response to the covid-19 pandemic.

A registered nurse specialising in emergency care, Jane has held a wide variety of clinical and managerial roles including Director of Commissioning, Director of Nursing and Deputy Chief Executive. 

She was appointed as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for England in March 2012. She created the ‘6Cs’ and published Compassion in Practice in December 2012. This was followed by the Leading Change, Adding Value framework in May 2016. She also launched the Perceptions of Nursing programme.

Jane was awarded Doctorates by Edge Hill University and Buckinghamshire New University, and is a visiting professor at Kingston University and St George’s University, London.

Jane is also a clinical Ambassador for the children’s charity Over the Wall, where she volunteers as a nurse, Clinical Adviser for Perfect Ward, and Chair of the Royal College of Nursing Foundation. In April 2020 she was appointed as a Trustee of the Covid-19 Health Care Support Appeal, a subsidiary of the RCN Foundation.
