On Tuesday 17 July, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer (APPGC) held its 5th annual Summer Reception. The event provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), which have improved their one-year cancer survival rates and reflect on the progress towards delivering the Cancer Strategy for England by 2020. Speeches on the importance of early diagnosis in cancer care were given by John Baron MP, Health Minister Steve Brine, and Lynda Thomas, CEO of Macmillan.
The reception provided an opportunity for MPs, Peers and other stakeholder organisations to come together to discuss this progress. It was also a chance to thank John Baron MP for all his hard work over the past nine years as chair of the group.
CloseOn 5 July, the APPGC hosted its annual Summer Reception in the Strangers’ Dining Room in Parliament. The reception was a great success with around 70 attendees from across the cancer community including parliamentarians, charities, patient representatives, Cancer Alliance Leads and Clinical Commissioning Groups.
At the Reception, the APPGC was re-launched in the new Parliament, where both new and returning MPs were invited to join the Group as Members and Officers. We also launched our inquiry into the England Cancer Strategy and continued our campaign to improve one year survival rates by celebrating those Clinical Commissioning Groups who have most improved their one year survival rates.
We heard speeches from the new Minister, Steve Brine MP, Nicola Hunt, Cancer Programme Director for NHS England, Professor Sean Duffy, Cancer Alliance Lead for West Yorkshire and Harrogate and Chair of the APPG on Cancer, John Baron.
All speakers emphasised the importance of delivering the ambitions of the Cancer Strategy with Steve Brine stating that 'he wanted the priorities of the Cancer Strategy to become the priorities of Government'.
CloseOn 6 July the APPGC hosted its annual Summer Reception, titled One year cancer survival figures: recognising progress at Strangers’ Dining Room in the House of Commons.
The Reception highlighted the work of the top 20 CCGs who have most improved their one year cancer survival figures over the last year. We were joined by 12 CCGs from across England who were presented with a certificate of recognition by John Baron MP, Chairman of the APPGC.
Over 80 people attended the event including representatives from across the cancer community; cancer charities, private sector, Macmillan patient representatives and 20 Parliamentarians.
Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison MP, addressed the reception and recapped the progress made over the last few years including the Cancer Strategy and reassured everyone that cancer will remain a priority for the government, regardless of what changes occur over the coming weeks and months. The attendees also heard from John Baron MP, and Dr Vivek Varakantam from East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG.

On the 1 July 2015 the APPGC held its annual Summer Reception in Parliament. The group highlighted local one year cancer survival rates, for which Clinical Commissioning Groups are now accountable.
60 parliamentarians attended, including Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt and Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison. As a result of the event, the APPGC now has 20 additional members. This reflects both the important function the APPGC performs and the recognition that it continues to receive.
At the Reception, speeches were given by John Baron MP - the chair of the APPGC, Lynda Thomas - the CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support, and Jane Ellison - Minister for Public Health. The Minister particularly praised the pack of materials the APPGC has created for MPs to take away, which included the APPGC’s new report, local statistics briefings, a press release and a template letter for MPs to send to their local CCGs.
CloseThe APPGC held a summer reception to celebrate the inclusion of the one year survival rates in the Clinical Commissioning Group Outcomes Indicator Set.
The reception was attended by around 80 stakeholders from the cancer community, and was addressed by the Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison MP and National Clinical Director for Cancer Sean Duffy. Attendees were able to receive briefings on one year survival rates in their local area, as well as see demonstrations of tools such as Macmillan’s Electronic Cancer Decision Support Tool, and the Recovery Package.
