His Majesty The King meets cancer patients ahead of new Macmillan Centre opening in York
For people living with cancer, by people living with cancer
We know access to good cancer care is not equal across the region, and this centre is a big step towards making support more accessible and fairer for everyone.
The King spent time with people living with cancer who talked about how much the original centre meant to them, with many describing it as a lifeline during treatment. They also shared how they helped to shape the new space from the services on offer, to the layout, furniture, artwork and colour palette. It is their inputs that are helping to create such a warm, calming environment, complete with a tranquil garden, where people living with cancer can find a sense of calm.
His Majesty also met Macmillan Healthcare Professionals and Cancer Nurse Specialists, who talked about how the redevelopment will help thousands of people each year by expanding community outreach and offering more comprehensive support.
A symbol of comfort for years to come
One of the most poignant moments of the day took place in the centre’s purpose‑built garden, where His Majesty planted a Macmillan Rose alongside Angie Lunt, Community Engagement Volunteer at the centre.
It felt like the perfect symbol. Just like the centre, it will continue to grow and bring comfort to people for many years to come.
Fairer cancer care for everyone
The new centre is designed to meet the needs by offering better, fairer cancer care for everyone. Many communities will benefit from it - from York and Scarborough to coastal towns, market towns and remote rural areas including older populations who often have more complex health needs.
It will be run by the Cancer Wellbeing Support Service and will give people easier access to information, emotional support and guidance to help them navigate their treatment with confidence.
Without you, this special centre would not be possible
The refurbishment has been funded by the generous donations of the public, including a lead gift from Lady Ogden and the Sir Robert Ogden Charitable Foundation – along with support from Scarborough Hospitals Charity, in partnership with York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are so grateful for the continued dedication of our supporters – you all play such an important role in helping use drive the change that is needed – to ensure better cancer care for everyone.
