Our partnership with Poundland

Poundland and Macmillan Cancer Support have been working together since 2009 to raise over £1.5 million. All the money raised will help ensure people affected by cancer, in communities across the UK, receive the support they need when they need it most.

Our partnership began when Poundland staff voted for Macmillan as their charity of the year in 2009. Seven years later the enthusiasm and commitment of their staff continues to grow as they take part in fancy dress themed days, bake sales, organised challenge events and even their own gruelling challenges such as the National Three Peaks.

In seven years we have worked together to grow and refresh the partnership, ensuring that Poundland employees from head office to shop floor, remain enthusiastic, and understand how their support makes a huge impact upon the lives of people affected by cancer. In March 2014, the partnership reached an incredible milestone, having raised a total of £1 million to help Macmillan ensure that no one has to face cancer alone. We marked the occasion with a celebratory roadshow that saw Macmillan tour the top 10 fundraising stores to say thank you to Poundland colleagues and customers for their support.

Since 2009, Poundland have really embedded Macmillan in their business, sharing the partnership with staff and customers alike. On top of the fantastic support from Poundland’s employees, we have worked together to develop fundraising products, from friendship bracelets to key rings, made available for a suggested donation in stores across the UK.

It doesn’t stop there, with Poundland’s suppliers donating products to support Team Macmillan runners at events like the London Marathon and the Great South Run, giving them a much needed refreshment or energy boost. At Christmas time, Poundland work with their generous suppliers to source festive gifts to make up much needed hampers for people affected by cancer, giving them an boost at what can be an especially difficult time of the year.

Seven years celebrated across seven special days

In August 2015 we celebrated seven years of success in partnership with Poundland by launching a unique week of fun, fundraising and awareness raising that reached employees and customers.

For seven days Poundland turned completely green for Macmillan, posting about the partnership on their social media channels each day. This was part of an online takeover and the initiative was selected by Third Sector as their digital campaign of the week – a fantastic idea and exemplary of how charities can utilise the online marketing channels of their corporate partners.

Together we also created a celebratory video telling the story of Penny, who saves her pound for something special. Hitting 28,000 views in the initial three days after launch, both Macmillan and Poundland were able to reach a vast audience. This allowed us to raise awareness of our partnership and also of Macmillan's services.

We are looking forward to continuing our work with Poundland by further engaging colleagues, customers and suppliers in some great fundraising activities and to further develop some innovative ideas that really will help to change lives with every pound.
