Council tax reduction

Local council tax reduction schemes have been introduced to replace Council Tax Benefit.

Differences across the UK

Council tax reduction schemes are different depending on where you live.

  • In England, each local council has its own council tax reduction scheme. The support available will depend on where you live.
  • In Scotland and Wales, national council tax reduction schemes are in place. These discounts are consistent across Scotland and Wales.
  • In some areas, councils also have discretionary funds for council tax. In these areas it may be possible to get a discretionary council tax payment. These schemes have different names in different areas.

How to claim

Contact your local council to find out what support they offer.

You should be able to find your council’s contact details in your local phone book or visit:

In Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, you pay rates instead of council tax. If you can’t afford to pay your rates bill, contact Land & Property Services on 0300 200 7801 as soon as possible. Before calling them, you should make a list of all the money that you (and anyone who lives with you) have coming in. This includes any benefit payments. There is a range of reductions and entitlements to help you pay your rates bill, including Housing Benefit and Rate Reduction. Visit nidirect to find out more.
