Our partnership with Nationwide

Nationwide Building Society and Macmillan have been working together for over 23 years, making the partnership one of Macmillan’s longest.

During this time, Nationwide employees and members have raised more than £7.1 million, which has gone towards improving the lives of people affected by cancer.

In 2014, our partnership with Nationwide was awarded Corporate National Partnership of the Year with a Financial Institution, at the Charity Times Awards. This was in recognition of the funding provided by Nationwide for Macmillan financial grants. These grants aim to support people affected by cancer who are experiencing difficulties with mortgage and rental arrears.

Our partnership with Nationwide continues to develop as we’re aware of the financial impact of cancer and the role the financial sector can play in supporting those affected. Nationwide part-funds the Macmillan Financial Guidance Service which supports people affected by cancer in navigating the financial services sector and improving their financial capability. In 2015, it provided advice to 5,733 people affected by cancer, and identified over £1.9 million in financial gains.

Macmillan has also worked with Nationwide to develop, train and implement a Specialist Support Service, aimed at assisting their more vulnerable members, particularly those affected by cancer. This is a first for the financial services sector, designed to provide free, tailored and confidential support. Each member of the team has received training from Macmillan and is able to talk in detail about Nationwide’s products and services.

Angela, Macmillan Financial Guidance Service:

'Once we have discovered that the caller has a financial product with Nationwide, it’s a fantastic feeling of relief really. We know we can then directly refer them through to the specialist team at Nationwide.

The relationship between Macmillan and Nationwide works both ways. Sometimes there’s an emotional need or a clinical need which obviously is outside of Nationwide’s remit.

The feedback that we’ve had from the customers who’ve been through the Nationwide service has been incredible.’

Nationwide employees also support Macmillan through many fundraising events, most notably during their very own Macmillan month every September – this raised over £200,000 in 2015.  A whole month of events sees employees up and down the country taking part, culminating in a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

In 2015 this also included an official Guinness World Record as hundreds of employees and members of Nationwide Building Society came together to have the world’s largest cream tea party. Read more about the event on the Nationwide website.
