Since November 2024, Vicky has completed over 30 parkruns since discovering the community event after treatment for cancer. Read more about her experience and how to get involved in parkrun for Coffee Morning this September.

Vicky's cancer experience

Vicky is sitting down on a boulder on top of a mountain. She is wearing a bright coat, long trousers and a rucksack. Behind her is a view of a valley.

Vicky was diagnosed with womb cancer.

"“It was an enormous shock to be diagnosed with womb cancer last year. I vividly remember leaving the hospital feeling like I'd been punched in the face. I was also holding a card with Macmillan cancer nurse specialist contact details," says Vicky.

“After a stressful and long bank holiday weekend, fearing the worst and googling all sorts of things, my first call was on the Tuesday morning to a Macmillan nurse.

“From that first call and onwards the nurse was so supportive, calm and helpful, and made a such positive difference throughout my cancer journey. She consistently kept me updated and informed, helped push things along, and called to check in how I was doing along the way.

“Macmillan’s Online Community was also a valuable resource, enabling me to connect with other people going through similar experiences. They were so caring, supportive, realistic, and honest."

Taking part in parkrun

Vicky is standing outside a castle or abbey ruin in a grassy field. She has on running gear like trainers, shorts and a light jacket. She is giving a thumbs up with both hands.

"I was fortunate that my cancer was caught early, and surgery was the only treatment I needed. As part of my post-surgery rehab, I attended a local NHS initiative called Active Against Cancer, which provides a tailored exercise programme for people with cancer," says Vicky.

"parkrun was mentioned to me at one of these sessions, it sounded interesting and in November 2024, I completed my first parkrun and was instantly hooked!

“I’ve since completed over 30 parkruns, achieved several self-imposed time targets with the help of friendly pacers, and have also started to give back by volunteering. Most importantly, a few weeks ago I realised that I'm no longer running to punish my body for having cancer, but I'm now proud of it and what it's been able to achieve."

Join Macmillan and parkrun for Coffee Morning this September

Last year, Macmillan work in partnership with parkrun, which saw 44 parkrun Coffee Morning events and raised a total of £15,000 for Macmillan.

This year, Macmillan is teaming up with parkrun on Saturday 27th September for an epic parkrun takeover. For the very first time, parkruns across the country will come together over the weekend in support of Macmillan.

As a free community event, parkrun encourages people to walk, jog, run or volunteer at number of locations across the UK every Saturday morning. There are currently over 1,300 parkrun events nationwide, and it continues to grow and maintain its loyal following.
