Marcia's story

Story
Published: 09 March 2026
In 2025, Marcia and her family held their 11th Coffee Morning! Their event included traditional Caribbean food and music, games in the garden for children and different types of cakes. They raised over £16,500 through their Coffee Mornings.

Marcia, Julia, Doreen, Sonia and Norma held their 11th Coffee Morning in August 2025. They lost their sister Doreen to leukaemia when she was just 4 years old. Three years ago, their uncle, Elroy was diagnosed with cancer.

Why they host Coffee Mornings

"Macmillan were brilliant when our uncle was diagnosed with bowel cancer," says Marcia. "He had a really positive, practical support from his Macmillan nurse and also help with his finances.

"But it's not just the practical side of things, it's the emotional support too. When he had finished treatment and came out on the other side, that's when Macmillan really helped him.

"When our sister Doreen passed away in 1968, there was nothing like the type of support that is available now. So many people are affected by cancer and these experiences have really strengthened and motivated us to keep fundraising for Macmillan, so people get the support they need. It's a reminder of why we do what we do."

Their 11th Coffee Morning

"Seeing everyone come together for the Coffee Afternoon with the Caribbean Twist was truly special," says Marcia.

"The atmosphere was incredible, filled with so much warmth and generosity, and you could really feel the community spirit. To know that our collective effort has raised over £8200 this year for Macmillan is deeply moving and genuinely overwhelming.

"It means that we're contributing directly to the vital support services that families rely on during the toughest times. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, and attended, your support makes a massive difference. We're already looking forward to next year!"
