Joseph, 57, was diagnosed with tonsil cancer and received chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. The treatment caused side effects including mouth ulcers and severe nausea, and it damaged his teeth.
Until recently, his only income was Employment and Support Allowance|, totalling £71.
He urgently needed dental treatment but couldn’t afford to have the work done.
An experienced welfare rights adviser made Joseph aware of the benefits and other financial help he was entitled to. This included:
Council Tax Benefit| Amount depending upon Joseph’s personal circumstances. Help with health costs under the Low Income Scheme| Provides help with dental and eye treatment, and fares to hospital.
Free prescriptions | As a person undergoing treatment for cancer, Joseph is entitled to free prescriptions.
The costs of cancer can seem never-ending when you have to keep buying things relating to your illness. If you're in this situation, the benefits discussed in this section could make life easier.
