Sue Greatrex is the mother of Sam, 30, who’s currently travelling around the world using only manpower to raise £240,000 for Macmillan. (In fact, you may remember that we wrote about Sam’s challenge last year.)
‘Sam was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma as a child,’ explains Sue. ‘He had a Macmillan nurse, Moira, and without her we would have been floundering around. She was our safety net.
On the subject of his incredible fundraising exploits, Sue remarks, ‘I’m very proud of Sam. What an absolutely fabulous thing he’s doing. And the fact that he’s trying to raise enough money to build a chemotherapy unit for other people to get treatment. What an amazing way to pay back.
‘It’s a mammoth task he’s taking on. I can’t believe he’s doing it. It takes an awful lot of courage. Once he gets something in his mind, he goes and does it.
‘I find it very difficult when he’s going off, and the thought of him rowing across the Atlantic, I cannot get my head around it. He’s amazing. I’ve had a joke with him that I’m going on a cruise and I’ll throw the anchor out.
