Macmillan’s Lido Challenge is not for the faint-hearted. The stamina-busting two-kilometre swim takes place in the UK’s largest outdoor pool in chilly October.
A gutsy group of 18 employees from ATD Travel Services took part in last year’s event raising nearly £5,000. Here Oliver Brendon, the company’s CEO, explains why it’s worth diving in to make a difference.
‘When Jimmy, a member of our sales team, was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukaemia we wanted to do something to help Macmillan support him. Our offices are close to the Tooting Bec Lido, so we thought, “Why not?”
‘The atmosphere on the day was electric. People were nervous but excited, and the whole team got involved. Those who didn’t swim brought along hot chocolate, banners and lots of moral support.'
‘Taking part as a team was great because we have some pretty competitive sports people, so this added a really fun element. Once the front runners had finished, they cheered on the remaining swimmers from the sidelines.
‘The biggest challenge was the cold. We were lucky enough to have a sunny day but most people swam without wetsuits and the water was freezing. The conditions made the sense of achievement afterwards all the greater, though. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone.’
