The illustration shows a cross-section of the head from the nose, down through the mouth and the neck. It shows the structures involved in swallowing. The soft palate is shown at the back of the mouth. There is an arrow pointing up towards the nose with the number 2. The tongue is shown also with an arrow going towards the throat, or pharynx. This arrow has a number 1. The windpipe is shown at the front of the neck and the gullet is a thin tube behind the windpipe. At the top of the windpipe and below the tongue, is a flap of tissue, called the epiglottis. A food bolus is shown at the back of the mouth behind the tongue.
