Kidney - close-up - image description

Image shows the position of the kidneys and bladder from the front view of a person’s body. There are two kidneys - one on the left and one on the right. The kidneys are at waist height. Each kidney is about the size of a fist. Each kidney has a tube, called a ureter, coming out of it. Each ureter is about 25 to 30cm in length. The ureters connect the kidneys to the bladder which sits at the front of the body between the hips.

The diagram also shows the structure of the kidney in cross section. It the area at the centre of the kidney called the renal pelvis. Also shown is the ureter, which leads to the bladder.
