Colonoscopy - image description

The image shows a person’s body from the front. The body is shown from the chest down to the upper legs. The large bowel is shown as an irregular shaped long tube inside the body. The tube starts at the left side of the person’s lower abdomen. It travels up to the mid abdomen then travels across the body and down the right side of the body. It then curves to the mid line of the body and narrows to a small opening called the anus between the legs. The area of bowel above the anus is called the rectum or back passage.

A thin tube is shown entering the bowel through the anus. This is a colonoscope. The tube has been passed up and round inside the large bowel. At the tip of the tube is a light.
