This is a new service for everyone with a diagnosis of cancer in your area. The cancer support worker can offer support for non-medical concerns you may have. Based on these concerns, the support worker will create a plan of care with you, and can signpost you to trusted information and services which may be helpful. The cancer support worker is not a registered nurse, but works closely with your local Macmillan community cancer nurse specialist team. For clinical concerns, the support worker will have access to the healthcare team who are treating you and can connect you to this team if required.
Covid 19 - In the light of the Covid 19 pandemic, the CSWs are active within their primary care teams as a flexible resource via telephone/NearMe, often contacting patients regularly to check in. Please continue to endorse the CSW service at this turbulent time, as they can add a layer of support for people with cancer, particularly as some Macmillan community nurses are redeployed to acute care. The project will continue to invite everyone with a new diagnosis of cancer in NHS Highland to the CSW service 8 weeks post diagnosis.
