Macmillan is working with the Western Health and Social Care Trust in Derry on plans to improve information and support for people affected by cancer at Altnagelvin Hospital’s new cross-border radiotherapy unit.
One of these joint projects is an information centre in the entrance to the new unit, which will consist of an open area with information stands, together with a quiet room for anyone wanting confidential one-to-one advice about cancer from trained staff and volunteers.
Heather Monteverde, General Manager of Macmillan in Northern Ireland, says: 'This is a very exciting partnership because we’ll be working with organisations on both sides of the border to ensure that people coming from north and south get all the information they need at the new and long-awaited radiotherapy unit.'
The plans don’t stop there. Macmillan NI and the Western Trust are investigating the potential to provide a larger development: a purpose-built information and support centre within a health and wellbeing campus on the Altnagelvin site.
