Macmillan support hub at the Beatson

More than 8,000 new patients are seen at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre every year, and this figure is increasing. The Beatson is regarded as one of the best places in the UK to receive cancer treatment. Now you can help us make sure it becomes one of the best places in the UK to receive cancer support.

We are delighted to share the news that Macmillan Cancer Support is investing £2.2m to build a new support hub at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

People with cancer and their families and friends need access to the right support to help them cope with all the change and uncertainty a cancer diagnosis can bring. Right now, not everyone receives this and we want to ensure we can create a world-class support hub at the Beatson to complement the already world-class treatment and staff.

Macmillan plans to extend and refurbish the front entrance of the Beatson, creating a larger, brighter, and more comfortable area that both acts as a support hub and provides space for patients and families to spend time together.

The new Macmillan support hub will make a vast difference by providing:

  • A much-expanded Macmillan Information and Support Centre where patients and carers can drop in for emotional support or to ask questions about cancer and its treatments.
  • Space for Macmillan Cancer Support’s specialist benefits advice team to speak to cancer patients and their families in private, and help people to claim the money they are entitled to.
  • A new, dedicated family area for children and teenagers to spend time with family members during visits to the Beatson.
  • A much larger and brighter cafe area, providing considerably more space for visitors and patients to eat together or chat in a relaxed environment.
  • A much-improved area for patients waiting on transport home, providing a spacious area with comfortable seating, as well as allowing patients to see outside and check whether their transport has arrived, without struggling from their seats.
  • A refurbished Sanctuary area which will allow those outside to look inside and see if the space is free to use. The Sanctuary is a quiet and peaceful reflection room but is frequently empty as people fear entering in case they interrupt someone.
  • An improved landscaped garden where people can relax and spend time in a quiet and peaceful environment.

Support our appeal

The Macmillan support hub at the Beatson will cost £2.2m. Work will begin in April 2017, with the support hub set to open to patients and families at the end of 2017/early 2018. Your donation can go directly towards this project and will help fund this important work.

Whether you wish to partner with us at your workplace, give your time, make a one-off donation or organise your own fundraising event, you can help make a real difference to people affected by cancer. For more information about how you can do this, please contact the Macmillan Fundraising Support Centre on 0300 1000 200 or email

Our target is big: we need £2.2m to enable this work to happen. There's a small chance we'll raise more than we need for this project, and if this happens then your gift will be used to provide much needed help and support to people affected by cancer in the West of Scotland.
