Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about Macmillan's Discounted Will Writing Service? Take a look at our frequently asked questions below.

What is Macmillan's Discounted Will Writing Service?

Macmillan Cancer Support is helping supporters to write their will for a discounted price. You can choose how you’d like to write your will; whether it is online, face to face at home, through the post or over the phone. Once you have chosen how you’d like to write your will, you will be asked to complete a form on our website. Macmillan will then either put you in touch with your chosen will writing partner directly or pass your details on to them for you.

Your chosen partner will then write a will that reflects your wishes. There is no obligation to leave a gift to Macmillan, but we would hugely value your support. Gifts in wills fund over a third of Macmillan’s income and are essential to help people with cancer live life as fully as they can.

What locations are covered?

Macmillan’s Discounted Will Writing Service is available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some of our will writing partners are unable to offer their services in every location; however, we will endeavour to match you with a suitable partner for your location through our online form.

What if I would like to write a joint / mirror will with my partner?

Macmillan’s Discounted Will Writing Service provide options for joint and mirror wills. Please let your chosen will writer know whether you would like a joint / mirror will at first contact or when providing your will instructions.

What if I need an urgent will?

Please note that The Goodwill Partnership does not provide urgent wills. If you have chosen to write your will with Irwin Mitchell and you need a will urgently, please contact them as soon as possible on 0330 123 3669 to discuss the options available to you.

What if my needs are complex and unsuitable for a standard will?

Macmillan is only able to provide a discount on simple wills. Complex wills may come at an additional cost. If your needs are complex, we would recommend selecting our solicitor partner, Irwin Mitchell, or finding your own solicitor through the Law Society at ( in Scotland).

Who are the will writing partners and what is the process?

Irwin Mitchell (UK-wide)

Irwin Mitchell provide online and postal wills, both with full telephone support available. Once you have registered for a discounted online will you will be sent a link to get started. This link will take you to Irwin Mitchell’s website where you will be asked to submit your will instructions via a webform. If you registered for a postal will Macmillan will provide Irwin Mitchell with your contact details and they will send you a will pack in the post for you to complete and return.

Once Irwin Mitchell have received your will instructions, they will write a draft version and send for your review within 15-20 working days. Once you’re happy with the will, they will then send you a final version along with instructions for signing.

Please note, Irwin Mitchell do provide urgent wills but ask that you make them aware of this as soon as possible. If not urgent, the will writing process typically takes 4-6 weeks.

The Goodwill Partnership (England & Wales)

The Goodwill Partnership provide wills via home appointment or telephone. Once you have registered for a discounted will Macmillan will provide The Goodwill Partnership with your contact details. They will then contact you via phone, email or post to arrange your will writing appointment.

During your appointment, a counsellor will ask you several questions and take your will instructions. Your will instructions will then be sent to a solicitor for them to draft your will. Once drafted, your will is then sent to you via post for your review along with instructions for signing.

Please note, The Goodwill Partnership do not provide urgent wills and the process typically takes 6-8 weeks.

Why do I need a will?

Everyone should have an up to date will. A will is a way of looking after the people and charities that you care about after you’re gone. It’s the only way to ensure your wishes are carried out. If someone dies without a will they die intestate – this can cause added stress for loved ones during an already difficult time and can also come at a financial cost.

Does Macmillan get a copy of my will?

Macmillan will not receive a copy of your will and we will not be informed of any of the contents as this remains a private matter. This is unless you explicitly consent to the will writing partner sharing information with us. If you choose to consent via our partners Macmillan may be informed on whether you have completed your will, if you have left a gift to Macmillan in your will and what the value of this gift is.

If I leave a gift to Macmillan how will it be spent?

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the biggest differences you can make to help people with cancer live life as fully as they can.

Gifts in wills bring in one third of our income and help to fund our services. To find out more about how Macmillan uses the money raised please see our annual report.

What if I wish to restrict my gift?

You may restrict your gift to Macmillan, but we ask that you express this as a ‘wish’ and keep it as broad as possible. For example, your county rather than the village you may live in. This limits the risk of Macmillan losing its right to this gift. If you would like more information on restricting your gift please contact our supporter care team on 0300 1000 200.
