Macmillan's 'Being There' Appeal

Rachel put her tiredness down to being a busy Mum. She never imagined it to be breast cancer. But with Macmillan’s support, Rachel was able to face her diagnosis and continue being there for her children.

Rachel's story

Rachel received her breast cancer diagnosis in 2016, turning her and her children’s worlds upside down. On the day of her consultation Rachel met Kay, her brilliant Macmillan nurse.

Kay was there for her from the very beginning, explaining the diagnosis in a way she could understand and answering all her questions. She was there during Rachel's scans at the breast clinic, and held her hand while she had chemotherapy. Kay was also able to support, guide and reassure Rachel through one of the hardest moments of her life - telling her children about her diagnosis.

Within a few weeks of starting chemotherapy, Rachel was told the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and she needed a mastectomy and radiotherapy.

Following her operation, she received support from the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. From counselling sessions and courses on body image, to workshops on skincare and yoga classes. Rachel was amazed by the services the centre offered, helping her feel more like herself again.

Currently, there are many families going through cancer who aren’t able to access the support that Rachel received. By donating today, you can help us be there for other parents, like Rachel, whatever cancer throws their way.
