We want to be behind even more people affected by cancer to ensure they receive the support of Macmillan’s services throughout their own cancer experience.
It all started when Matt found a lump. Coincidentally, he had been working on a report into testicular cancer at work (he worked in television) and a few things had come up that made him realise he was at a higher risk than other men – but he was healthy, young, fit, and cancer was the last thing Matt was thinking about. Eventually, a scan confirmed his worst fear – Matt did actually have testicular cancer.
It all moved quickly from there, in the whirlwind that can follow a cancer diagnosis - only 2 weeks later he had surgery to remove his testicle. While he had the full support of his mum and his girlfriend through this difficult time, he didn’t realise how much he would need the support of another woman – and then Matt met his Macmillan nurse, Wendy.
Over the next few months, Matt had a series of blood tests, and eventually had to go into chemotherapy. During this incredibly stressful time Matt was filled with uncertainty and overwhelmed with information.
Wendy was always there, explaining complicated medical information from the doctors to Matt and his family in an easy-to-understand way, helping him to arrange his appointments, and giving him emotional support. Wendy was there to put Matt’s mind at ease with the possible side effects of treatment, as well as to reassure his mum, dad and girlfriend Lara – all of whom were also struggling with the news of their loved one’s cancer.
'Throughout this whole journey, I don’t know what we would have done without Wendy’s help.' - Matt
We are so pleased to share that Matt has now recovered - in fact he’s amazingly just completed the London Marathon raising over £3,000 for Macmillan.
Each day 1000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK. Macmillan is here to help people keep living their best life. We give the support needed for people affected by cancer to hold on to who they are and what’s important.
But we can’t do it without you. Please give what you can today to support more people like Matt.
