Paul on emotional support for his partner

Story
Paul and his partner Angela are doing gardening. Their dogs are beside them.

When retired science teacher, Paul, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he soon realised that he was not the only person who would need support. Angela, his partner, needed as much emotional support as he did - and that's where Macmillan came in.

'Macmillan could offer Angela that little bit of emotional support that I couldn't.'

Information and Support Officer, Mario, pointed out that Angela might need just as much support as I did, and that Macmillan could deal with that so I didn’t have to. I’m not generally an emotional person. I don’t react well to crying and sadness and that sort of thing. Macmillan could offer Angela that little bit of emotional support that I couldn’t – but again, only if we needed it.

'She had that sort of neutral place to go.'

I knew I’d have some dark moods, it was inevitable. And when that happened, Angela would have somebody to call, someone to fall back on who wasn’t part of her circle of friends, because they’re emotionally involved. She had that sort of neutral place to go - not that we needed to use it very often - but knowing that the support was there was one of the key things. Macmillan was always there. It’s only a phone call away, and that was very reassuring for me. Angela had somebody there on the end of the phone, who she could call at any time and who was non-judgmental. It took a weight off me.
