RECORD BREAKING TOTAL IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE FOR MACMILLAN’S WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING
Macmillan Cancer Support’s flagship annual fundraiser, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, enjoyed another record-breaking year in 2016, raising a total of £29.5million for people affected by cancer.
The annual mass fundraising event took place on Friday 30 September 2016 and saw millions of people get together for coffee and cake. This year’s total brings the overall amount raised since the event started in 1991 to £194million.
The 26-year-old fundraising event is not only Macmillan’s flagship fundraiser but it is the original and most successful charity fundraising event of its sort. The first official Coffee Morning saw 2,600 supporters raise £208,000; by last year the number of registered hosts had risen to almost 220,000. Along with celebrity support from the likes of Larry Lamb, Martin Clunes and Alison Steadman in the run up to the day, #CoffeeMorning trended on twitter throughout the day and over 61,000 mentions of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning were recorded in the week leading up to the event.
Macmillan’s Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, Richard Taylor, said:
“I’d like to thank every single one of our wonderful coffee morning hosts and guests who took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning last year. There are 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and that number is only set to rise. This shows that the need to support people affected by cancer is growing and getting together to fundraise by holding a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is more important than ever.
“We simply couldn’t do the work we do – from funding specialist nurses, to staffing our support line and providing cancer information – without the generous support of our fundraisers. Every cake baked and every coffee sold at a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning plays a huge part in raising the vital funds needed to help us ensure no one faces cancer alone.”
In 2017 the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning falls on Friday 29th September. Find out more at macmillan.org.uk/coffee, follow the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on twitter @macmillancoffee or find it at www.facebook.com/macmillancoffee
