Today [Thursday] the leaders of the NHS in England published the Five-year forward view which sets out why the NHS needs to change and the actions NHS England will take to deliver the transformed care for patients, including the five year ambitions for cancer.
Responding to the publication, Juliet Bouverie, Director of Services and Influencing at Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“The Forward View once again highlights that cancer care in this country isn’t fixed and that we still have a long way to go if our survival rates are to catch up with the best in Europe.
“We welcome the focus on swifter and earlier diagnosis as well as the need to ensure everyone has access to the best treatment and support, in particular after treatment has finished. In order to achieve this ambition there needs to be the right skills, capacity and leadership in place throughout the health system.
“As the number of people getting diagnosed with cancer continues to grow, it is vital we tackle this looming cancer care crisis before it’s too late. Macmillan Cancer Support looks forward to working with NHS England to shape and implement a plan to ensure we deliver this five year ambition.”
