Responding to the latest National Institute for Care and Health (NICE) guidelines which calls to help GPs diagnose cancer earlier, Dr Rosie Loftus, Joint Chief Medical Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“Macmillan Cancer Support is pleased to see NICE taking action to improve earlier diagnosis of cancer. Ensuring people are diagnosed early is crucial as it gives people a better chance of surviving cancer and having fewer long-term complications.
“However we recognise that there will still be significant challenges in implementing these guidelines.
“We know that every GP wants to do a good job and identify cancer early and what will really enable them to do so consistently is more practical support in the work place. In particular they need more support to identify the symptoms of cancer types which are very hard to spot, such as pancreatic cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support has developed a number of tools for GPs including an electronic tool to help them make decisions about cancer when they need it. We will continue to provide support for GPs and will be making an updated referral toolkit available to all.”
