Money raised is enough to fund over 5,700 Macmillan nursing hours in celebration of International Nurses Day.
Macmillan Cancer Support and the UK’s leading general retailer Home Retail Group raised £156,000 for people affected by cancer during their new charity partnership launch month. The money raised will fund over 5,700 hours of Macmillan nursing care. Home Retail Group colleagues from Argos, Homebase and Habitat voted to support Macmillan as their new charity partner and aim to raise £3million over the next two years.
From 27th March 2015, over a number of weekends, colleagues from Argos and Homebase took part in ‘Go Mad, Go Green, Go Macmillan’ fundraising weekends and stores across the country were each challenged to raise £27 – enough to fund a Macmillan nurse for an hour. Colleagues held bake-sales, organised raffles and ran in-store collections to beat their fundraising target for Macmillan.
Today [12 May] is International Nurses Day, which makes the announcement of a further 5,700 hours of Macmillan nursing care for people affected by cancer even more timely.
Commenting on the launch, Claire McMaster, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Macmillan Cancer Support, says: “The beginning of our partnership with Home Retail Group has been Macmillan’s most successful ‘charity of the year’ corporate partnership launch to date; we are delighted with how well it has been received. Home Retail Group’s colleagues and customers fully embraced the challenge of raising enough money to fund a Macmillan nurse for an hour, and many stores raised far in excess of this amount which is incredible. On International Nurses Day, I’m delighted to confirm that many more hours of care have been secured for people affected by cancer, which will help Macmillan to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.”
Amy Whidburn, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Home Retail Group added: “Over the launch of our brand new charity partnership with Macmillan we saw incredibly high levels of engagement from stores right across the country, which is fantastic. We far exceeded our fundraising target, and having voted to support Macmillan, our colleagues will be delighted to know that they are making such a tangible difference to people affected by cancer by funding over 5,700 Macmillan nursing hours.”
Argos stores will support Macmillan’s next big fundraising campaign, Night In throughout May, with colleagues joining together for a range of events with their store and office workmates from quiz challenges to movie nights.
