2 June 2014
A leading engineering solutions provider, Costain, today announced the launch of its ‘150 Year Challenge’ to mark the company’s 150 year anniversary. The challenge, which will begin in January 2015, will call upon its employees to raise £1 million through a multitude of fund-raising events throughout the year.
The Company is in the process of setting up a charitable Foundation to which the Company will make an initial donation to launch the campaign. The campaign will raise funds for four national charities - the British Heart Foundation (BHF), Macmillan Cancer Support, The Princes Trust and Samaritans - who will all benefit equally from the fundraising.
Catherine Warbrick, Director for Corporate Responsibility at Costain, said, “Each of the charities’ work resonates with many of the initiatives Costain is currently involved with, whether it’s trying to help young people into work or ensuring and improving the wellbeing, both mentally and physically, of its employees and the communities it serves.
“Our aim is to raise £1million by the end of 2015 and we’re looking for everyone in the company to get involved. All of us at some point, either personally or through someone we know, has benefited from the great work these charities do. We have a fantastic track record of imaginative and energetic fundraising and this new challenge will help even more people get involved and share in the success of their colleagues.”
Andrew Wyllie, Costain’s Chief Executive, said: “Costain Cares has already delivered tangible, long-term benefits to our business as well as the communities in which we operate. With this new foundation, our 150 year history, and the ongoing dedication of our people, we can really make a difference and deliver our full potential, for the benefit of society as well as the company.”

The Princes Trust
Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. It supports 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Prince’s Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. The Trust’s programmes give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training. The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped 750,000 young people since 1976 and supports over 100 more each day.
Further information about The Prince’s Trust is available at princes-trust.org.uk or on 0800 842 842.
Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. The charity’s helpline provides a safe place for anyone struggling to cope, whoever they are, however they feel, whatever life has done to them.
The service is available round the clock, every single day of the year and people can get in touch by phone, e-mail, text and face to face at one of the 201 branches across the UK and Ireland.
