Creamy mash potato

This dish is high in calories and protein. It is suitable for people on a soft or pureed diet, and might appeal to people with poor appetites.

Serves 6. Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes.


  • 1kg floury potatoes (for example Maris Pipers, King Edwards or Russets) 
  • 150g butter 
  • 150ml double cream 
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into roughly 2-inch (5cm) chunks.
  2. Place in a large pan and cover with cold, salted water.
  3. Bring up to a simmer and cook until the largest chunks of potato are soft and ready to mash.
  4. Drain the potatoes and leave for two minutes in the colander.
  5. Mix the cream and butter in a jug and microwave or heat in a saucepan until hot.
  6. Return the potatoes to the pan and mash with a hand masher or potato ricer until all the lumps have all gone.
  7. Put the potatoes on a low heat and stir in the cream and butter mixture with a wooden spoon.
  8. Season to taste and serve.
