Donald interned with our Digital Engagement Team while studying at university. He was able to try his hand at a wide range of activities, from helping with social media to analysing the performance of our website.

Donald's story

I wanted to do an internship in the charity sector and having had family members affected by cancer, Macmillan was the obvious choice. I was over the moon when I got offered the role.

The internship did not disappoint. By my second week I was already working on multiple projects, including supporting the Not Alone campaign. The Digital team is always buzzing with activity. I even had the chance to watch 'Miss You Already,' a movie that we were doing marketing activity around, before it had premiered in cinemas.

Helping out with social media was one of the most memorable experiences. I was thanking people for donating or raising awareness and directing people towards sources of support. It gave me such a sense of purpose and reminded me why Macmillan’s work is so important.

Both my Intern Manager and the person who organised the internship were very supportive and helpful. I always got my lunch and travel expenses back pretty quickly, and I was invited to shadow other Macmillan teams and given the chance to attend industry talks, skills sessions and even a CV workshop. The mentorship I received has been really helpful in increasing my confidence.

The floor I worked on was the coolest; there are lots of social spaces where you can eat lunch or catch up. We had weekly after work drinks, lunchtime Pilates, and a massive staff bake-off, which raised funds for Macmillan. The office culture is fantastic and I have had more slices of birthday cake in the Macmillan offices than I have had in my entire life.

I am now back at Brunel University, in my second year studying Business Computing with Human Computer Interaction. Interning in such a relevant field gave me a lot of insight into how my studies will apply to my future career.
